Online Publishing and Advertising

Syncopated Systems has advertised online since 1985 and today helps individuals, businesses, and other organizations leverage this experience to manage their online presence by:

  • Creating, updating, and securing email, Web sites, and other online accounts
  • Registering internet domain names and hosting domains using qualified partners
  • Limiting liability and maximizing value through regulatory compliance, industry standards, best practices, and performance optimization

Web sites should be easy to use and accessible to the widest possible audience.

Unfortunately, many Web pages include markup errors that limit their usability, and some—with too many errors—prevent access completely by crashing browsers.

Too many Web developers appear to be unaware of the industry’s legal requirements (for privacy, reasonable accomodation, intellectual property, etc.), standards, good/best practices, governing body, or free online quality-measurement tools such as the W3C Markup Validation Service and Lighthouse.

For twenty-first century online communication, Syncopated Systems advocates the following:

  1. Create and use your own domain name. When having your own internet domain costs so little, how professional do you look when you use an email address at Gmail, Comcast, or AOL? Remember that although your own web site could be seen by anyone, many people don’t use social media sites, which limit access to those with accounts (and agree to their terms of service). For your security as well as professional appearance, your web site should not include the name of its developer, host, or content management system, especially if technology is part of your business.
  2. Focus on your message, high-performance delivery, and regulatory compliance. Learn the laws, write and publish your privacy policy, and make reasonable accommodations for those who access the Web differently. Don’t risk loosing users to bad design, markup errors, or long waits while loading unnecessary data. Hone a concise message and proofread it, especially for grammar and spelling.
  3. Never publish your email address on the Web. Instead, use contact forms. Syncopated Systems online forms balance ease-of-use, automation, and proven protection from high-volume unwanted commercial email. Remember that prevention costs less than cure.

Whether you want your site to have the flexibility provided by an online content management system such as Wordpress, the high performance of a custom implementation, or a hybrid balancing both, Syncopated Systems provides expert guidance and site development services with better value than those with less experience.

Office Automation

Syncopated Systems can help you get the most value from your office equipment.

Microcomputers

The Internet and the World-Wide Web are built on Unix and Linux.

Microsoft Windows is useful for many things, but is inherently less capable and secure, and demonstrably much more expensive to maintain.

A 2016 report from IBM noted that the costs of supporting Windows-based computers were about three times higher than similar Apple computers, which run Unix; IBM again reported in 2019 that costs of supporting computers running Windows may be up to about 22 times higher than Apple’s Unix-based computers. A much earlier study from another source found that Unix-based computers were about 10 times cheaper to maintain than Windows-based computers, which Syncopated Systems confirms through experience.

Apple is not the only source of Unix-based computers, and we can expect similar cost savings with computers running Linux, which is a free software alternative (using open source code) that was created to be “Unix-like”.

In 2019, IBM invested heavily in Linux by acquiring the second-largest (after Intel) contributor to its code base, Red Hat.

Today, free software is easily available to perform most business tasks better than Microsoft products (and now services) while eliminating purchase costs and reducing recurring costs by about 90%.

Telephones

With cellular telephone service so widely available, it’s now hard to imagine most businesses needing wired telephones.

The emergence of digital audio technologies has allowed telephony networks to maximize profit per line by converting them from parts of switched circuits to carriers of switched data packets.

This technology is essentially the same as (and is in some cases replaced by) voice over internet protocol (VoIP).

Of the many VoIP telephone systems available today, only one appears to be a true private branch exchange (PBX), which keeps local conversations on the local network rather than connecting two local extensions only through an internet data connection, which is sometimes unreliable and always non-private. For small offices, Syncopated Systems proudly recommends the ring-u Hello Hub.
